Alpaca Draw String Cowl Hat pattern

This can be worked in stripes or one colour. The pattern is for the two colour green and white one pictured and for a single colour hat (not pictured). All colour changes need to be done on a knit round.

Yarn: 2 colours of Worsted/10ply/Aran weight (Drops Nepal)
Needles: 4.5mm & 5.5mm + 5.5mm DPN.

Using 4.5mm needles and your MC (main colour) (I used Drops Nepal in Olive) CO 88stitches.
Join work and K2, P2 for eight rounds.

Switch to 5.5mm needles. Place marker.
Round one: K2, P2 to marker.
Round two: Knit to marker.
Repeat these two rounds until work measures 8cm from rim.

On a knit round switch to your CC (contrast colour) (Drops Nepal Off White).
repeat the two rows of K2, P2 and a knit round until work measures 18cm from rim.

On a knit round switch back to the MC yarn and follow the same pattern (K2, KP one round, Knit one round repeat). Continue until work measures 26cm.

To make the loop holes:
On a knit round; *K2, yo, K2tog, repeat from * to marker
K2, P2 the next round as usual and continue the pattern for another four rounds.
Cast off in pattern and neaten up loose ends.

To make the icord:
Using the MC and 5.5 mm DP needles, CO 4st. K1, Sl1 purlwise, K1, Sl1 purlwise.
Repeat this one row. (Here are the easiest  icord instructions, I've seen so far).

(Make the cord at least 30cms longer than the circumference of the cowl hat, but I would say, no longer than twice the circumference.)

Using MC knit for 10cm. Switch to CC and continue knitting until the cord measures approximately 80cm. Switch back to your MC and knit 10cms.
Cast off and tidy up/weave in/sew in loose ends.

Thread you icord throught the loops and you're ready to go!

For a one colour cowl hat:

Using 4.5mm needles and your MC (main colour) (I used Drops Nepal in Olive) CO 88stitches.
Join work and K2, P2 for eight rounds.

Switch to 5.5mm needles. Place marker.
Round one: K2, P2 to marker.
Round two: Knit to marker.
Repeat these two rounds until work measures 26cm from rim. Make loop holes.

To make the loop holes:
On a knit round; K2, yo, K2tog
K2, P2 the next round as usual and continue the pattern for another four rounds.

Cast off in pattern and neaten up loose ends. Make icord as above.

As you can see, my icord is almost twice the length of the circumference of the hat.

  2. Hi,
Just wanted to say Thank You for the great hat patterns. I noted on one pattern you said you were sick, I'm very sick right now and can't sleep so i'm looking at patterns. Right now i'm too weak to knit but I hope to be back at it soon and I can't wait to try one of you great ideas. Thanks so much for posting these for free. Only way I can afford patterns these days.
